The Club was founded on the principal of providing more opportunity for kids from NOHA District No. 2 to play elite hockey.  AAA programs in our district included the Onaping Falls Huskies (Major Bantam AAA), the Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats (Major Midget AAA), and the Valley East Cobras (Major Midget AAA). 

The Club applied to the Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA) to rationalize the existing elite hockey programs in our district and, on February 26, 2007, the NOHA approved the creation of the Nickel City Sons Hockey Club (the Club).

The last season the club had three AAA teams in its program:
- The Nickel City Sons AAA Major Midget team (merger of Sabrecats & Cobras)

- The Nickel City Sons AAA Major Bantam team (formerly the Huskies) 

- The Nickel City Sons AAA Major Peewee team
